I wouldn't consider the 402 a woofer. It's more a "full range" sort of anyway. For HiFi I'd go 406.
anyone have experience with both drivers, and care to share thoughts?
not a whole lot of info on the 402...

interesting....
I have some 406, a user over at LHS recently acquired a set of boxes with the 402s
and was asking....
Altec Monterey/834A
kinda interesting... quasi- fullrangers....
IIRC, cabinets also sported sectoral tweeters without vanes...
report was bass shy... I thought they could have been earlier variants of the 406....
and commented that the 406 variants certainly didn't get that compliant ( bass shy)....
makes more sense, the report.... now.
( sorry for the slow response....
been trying to resurrect a hammond solovox,
to go with a recently resurrected model d hammond....
lots of fun.... and as a side note....
hi-fi amplifiers have modest amounts of wiring...
in my new found perspective....
also... really old cotton insulated, cloth covered wiring
( formerly at least... by now, it sometimes is literally disintegrating),
can be somewhat of an electrical hazard....![]()

I've got a pair of Monterey Jr.s, but I haven't had them hooked up for quite some time. They've got a single 402 with the surroundless tweeter......can't recall what that's called.
